World of Warplanes is a massively multiplayer online arcade flight simulator in the historical setting surrounding World War II. It was announced by Wargaming.net on June 7, 2011 in Los Angeles at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. The game is currently in open beta testing.
In June 2011 Wargaming.net announced the game World of Warplanes and published an article on the World of Tanks website, the first part of which stated that the gameplay, overall global map, and financial system would be similar to World of Tanks.
In August 2011 Wargaming.net announced that the game was in early alpha-testing and opened the official forum. This was followed by a few details about the game as well as a trailer submitted to Gamescom 2011.
